Returning Stang: Melfort welcomes back goalie depth

Oct 3, 2022 | 3:45 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have regained their backup goalie from last season.

James Venne is back in town after starting the year in the Western Hockey League (WHL).

The 2004-born netminder played in two pre-season games for the Medicine Hat Tigers before being traded to the Prince Albert Raiders.

Venne suited up once for the Raiders as a backup, however never actually got into a contest with the team.

The Saskatoon product was a big factor in the Mustangs’ 2021-22 regular season, especially in the month of December, which saw a stretch of him competing in 17 consecutive matches.

As a whole, Venne played in 33 games with Melfort last year during which he earned a 17-7-5 record with a 2.76 goals-against-average, a .898 save percentage and two shutouts.

He quickly made his first appearance with the team this year just a day after the announcement came, in a 6-1 win against the Notre Dame Hounds.

The club is currently 3-3-2-0 on the new season, as they travel to Melville tomorrow to battle the Millionaires.
