Humboldt Mayor ‘humbled’ after receiving medal in recognition of Queen Elizabeth II

Oct 7, 2022 | 2:10 PM

The mayor of Humboldt is one of 7,000 people across the province receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.

It was created in recognition of the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s reign, which happened in February 2022.

Michael Behiel told northeastNOW it was decided that mayors across the province would receive a medal, however, he was quite humbled to hear that two unknown people still decided to nominate him.

“I was led to understand that they were acknowledging, that they felt I had done outstanding work to try and better our community, better our province, and all people.”

Behiel received his medal at a ceremony that featured several others, some of which who’ve been recognized on a provincial level on multiple occasions.

He said meeting these people who simply just wanted to help their community was a huge inspiration boost.

“I’m banging my head against a brick wall, I’m feeling like I’m not having the impact that I want to have, so seeing other people… it makes me keep moving forward and trying to affect change for the betterment of everybody.”

Meanwhile, these medals appear to be a one-off occasion.

Due to them being created in honour of her 70th anniversary and now that she has passed away, the 7,000 who receive them will be the only ones in the province to ever get them.

“Knowing that it’s the final one that’s ever going to be issued definitely makes me feel a lot more thankful that I was recognized and given the opportunity this year,” said Behiel.
