Overtime Heartbreak

Mustangs fall in overtime heartbreaker to Bruins

Oct 9, 2022 | 9:22 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have fallen in overtime… again.

This time, at home to the Estevan Bruins. It’s the Mustangs fourth loss in extra time this season, easily the most in the league, no other team has more than two losses in the extra frames.

Mustangs forward Boston Maxwell says it’s frustrating when they can’t seem to finish a game in overtime, but they have to continue to battle.

“Keep plugging away at it,” he said. “There’s not a whole lot else that we can do, we have a lot of skill on this team and I think it’s just a matter of waiting for our time to come. It’s not here yet, but it’s coming.”

Melfort got off to a solid start as Wyatt Day scored his second of the season about halfway through the first period.

Estevan would respond in the second, to make it 1-1, leading to an exciting third period.

Ashton Taylor would give Melfort a late lead after getting a nice feed from Hayden Tuba who was exiting the penalty box. However, that only lasted two-and-a-half minutes as the Bruins would respond with about five minutes left to play in the game thanks to an Alex Blanchard goal.

In overtime, it didn’t take long for the Bruins to give the puck to Kade Runke who circled the Melfort zone with a defender on his hip before roofing one past Joel Favreau before 30 seconds had even ticked off the clock.

For Melfort, it’s their third loss in a row, and Maxwell added that they’re still learning a lot through 11 games in the season.

“It’s tough not getting these wins early in the season,” Maxwell said. “But I think it’s going to teach us a valuable lesson and I think we’re going to be better for it.”

Melfort falls to 3-4-4-0 on the year and are back on the ice on Tuesday when they visit the Notre Dame Hounds.
