Mustangs fall to Klippers in back half of western road swing
The Melfort Mustangs fell in game one of the regular season “Fouillards Cup” on Saturday night 7-4 to the Kindersley Klippers as they wrapped up their western road swing.
The tough loss comes just a night after the Mustangs had one of their best games of the year in a 2-1 shootout win over the previously undefeated Battlefords North Stars.
On Saturday, it was the first period that hurt the Mustangs as they fell behind 4-2 after one which included goals 27 seconds apart for Kindersley to make it 2-1. Zac Somers opened the scoring for Melfort while Dawson Leroux added the other on the powerplay later in the frame. The Klippers scored with less than five minutes to play in the first and with that, they ended Joel Favreau’s night after four goals on 11 shots for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs gave up a goal early in the second, 11 seconds in to be exact, and after that Melfort seemed to control play from then on throughout the remainder of the game. Clarke Huxley made it 5-3 in the second period, while Somers scored his second of the night to make it 5-4 in the third. However with the net empty, a pass to the blue line in the offensive zone for the Mustangs missed the defenceman and went down into the yawning cage for a 6-4 Klippers lead before another empty netter made it 7-4.
