Somers shines as Mustangs down Bruins for second straight win

Oct 23, 2022 | 11:18 AM

For the first time this season, the Melfort Mustangs have won back to back hockey games.

This comes after a 3-2 win over the Estevan Bruins on Saturday night at the Northern Lights Palace which followed a 3-1 win on Friday night by the Mustangs.

Estevan scored the opening goal on Saturday just four minutes in courtesy of Owen Miley. Although after the first period, the Mustangs took over and decided they weren’t going to let this one slip away.

Zac Somers scored twice in under a minute to make it 2-1 Mustangs through two periods of play. He says this game was a big building block to continue stringing wins together.

“I think it was just a matter of time before we cracked that goalie,” Somers said. “Once we got one, we started rolling, the boys got up on the bench, and away we went.”

Ryan Duguay would add the insurance marker for the Mustangs, six minutes into the third period to make it 3-1, and from then on, Melfort did what they could to lock things down. Kade Runke would make it 3-2 late, but that’s as close as the visiting Bruins would get as the Mustangs improve to 6-6-4-0 on the year.

Somers and Duguay were in on all three goals as their line, which also included Riley Ashe, combined for 11 points on the weekend. Somers said he and the newcome, Duguay, mesh well.

“He’s a good all-around player,” Somers said. “He moves the puck, plays with his head up, and we just gel. Right when he got here, two games together, so we’ve gelled together really well, it’s awesome.”

Melfort will look to make it three straight on Wednesday, Oc.t 26 as they take on the Weyburn Red Wings at the Northern Lights Palace.
