Brandt sponsors Northern Lights Palace ice-resurfacer

Oct 26, 2022 | 4:59 PM

The City of Melfort approved Brandt Agriculture’s offer to sponsor the Northern Lights Palace ice-resurfacer.

The deal will see Brandt give a total of $100,000 to the city over the next 10 years ($10,000 per year), with an option to renew at the end of the 10-year term.

City Manager Adam Homes told northeastNOW Brandt was the one who sought out the deal.

“We had a current sponsor that didn’t wish to proceed for the next 10 years, so then Brandt came knocking on our door and said they were very interested in being a partner with the city. We’re very happy that they came for it.”

As for where the funds will go for the city, they are looking at purchasing a new ice resurfacer.

The current one has been in service for the past 20 years and an upgrade is needed.

“This allows us to kind of proceed with procurement on it and we’re very excited because we’re gonna get an electric Zamboni, which will be our first one and from everything that we hear, they run just great for facilities,” said Homes.

A total of $188,700 was approved in the 2022 budget for such a purchase, with the direction that $100,000 in sponsorship was secured.

With the idea of going electric, Homes explained it can save them money and save the environment.

“We don’t have to deal with things like natural gas, or propane, which there’s a hazard with dealing with those types of materials with this type of equipment. We don’t have to deal with any type of combustible gases, so, obviously, there’s a green factor, which is a reduction in our CO2.”

A charging station will also have to be purchased, as the ice-resurfacer will be plugged in after every use and there won’t be “any issue with running out of juice.”

The city isn’t expecting a new machine, until at least December of 2023.

In the meantime, Brandt decals will be placed on the existing Olympia Ice-resurfacer.

Once the new machine shows up, the city mentioned they will “keep the current one as a backup”.

Six season tickets to Melfort Mustangs games were also included in the sponsorship agreement.
