Mustangs find offensive touch in road victory over Bruins

The Melfort Mustangs are back in the win column after a big 6-2 win over the Estevan Bruins on Friday night in Estevan.

It was the first game in nine days for the Mustangs, and there was clearly no rust to be had for the visiting club as Kevin Minnoch would open the scoring for Melfort just 49 seconds into the hockey game. Melfort would get goals from Wyatt Day and Leyton Holoien before the first had even ended to jump out to the early 3-0 lead.

“Full credit to the players,” said Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins. “In the last few weeks here we’ve hammered into them quite a few different things. They’ve kept their spirits up and really brought it tonight.”

Zac Somers would add one in the second period to give Melfort the 4-0 lead before Estevan would finally get on the board at the 13:07 mark of the second period. However, the lead got back to four just over a minute later for Melfort as Clarke Huxley would get his fourth of the year.

In the third period, the Bruins got aggressive and played with the empty net at various points in the period, including on a few early powerplays. Cody Davis would get one with the net empty for Estevan, but that’s all they would get as Ashton Taylor fired one into an empty cage for Melfort, giving the Mustangs the 6-2 lead.

The six goals were the most the Mustangs have scored this season, and Blevins said what they’ve been working on showed in the game.

“We had some confidence with the puck really,” he said. “We picked our heads up, we made plays, we definitely had more swagger with the puck, got things settled down, and capitalized on our chances.”

The win also snapped a mini two-game losing streak for Melfort who is now 8-8-4-0 on the year.
