Youth curling events coming to Humboldt

Some curling events for youth are coming to Humboldt next March. CURLSASK has announced triples tournaments for U15, and U12 curlers in Humboldt March 11-12.

Dustin Mikush of CURLSASK siad much of the emphasis is on keeping young curlers engaged and continuing in the sport.

“We’ve seen tremendous growth and positive feedback of the Triples format,” he said. “Our intention of creating these two events is to develop interest in our young curlers and to keep them playing.”

Mikush explained the triples format is fairly new, and designed with younger curlers in mind.

There’s three people per team instead of four, and gender doesn’t matter. You can register as an individual or as a team.

“If you’re a rural kid from a small town and looking to come learn more and meet some new curlers that maybe you’ll be teammates with in future years, definitely come on out,” he said. “The great option is that they can register as an individual. We can team them up with other kids from across the province so it’s a pretty accessible event.”

An added attraction for the Humboldt event will be the opportunity to learn from Canadian Champion, Kirk Muyres, in a “learn to curl” hour before the games are underway.

Mikush said it’s all part of making the events both a fun, and learning experience.

“To be able to play in an open event where they’re able to meet curlers from across the province will be exciting for them, and hopefully get them to choose our provincial sport,” he said.

He said an inaugeral event in Regina at the end of this month will have curlers from around the province, and they are hoping for the same for the Humboldt event. He said Humboldt’s central location will also make it attractive for kids around the province.
