Mustangs stay hot with win in Weyburn

Dec 11, 2022 | 10:37 AM

The Melfort Mustangs return home from a southern road swing to Estevan and Weyburn with four of a possible four points after a 3-2 Friday night win in a shootout over Estevan and a 3-2 win over Weyburn on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Mustangs may have not had their best stuff, getting outshot 29-22 in the win, but also falling behind 2-1 heading into the third period.

However, the Mustangs did start the game well, opening the scoring thanks to David Rioux. Weyburn answered with a Simon Pollock goal, and Nicholas Kovacs on the powerplay. Penalty trouble also got in the Mustangs way of gaining momentum, but it also eventually helped them as a powerplay goal from Dawson Leroux would tie the game halfway through the third period.

That was followed by the eventual game-winning goal from Leith Olafson. Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said that while they weren’t at their best in the first two periods, they got back to it in the third.

“They’ll find a way,” Meyers said. “We’re missing some key players, but lots of the other guys stepped up.”

Leroux and Olafson led the charge with guys stepping up as they each scored, but Clarke Huxley and Leyton Holoien each had two assists. In between the pipes, another veteran 20-year-old Joel Favreau stopped 27 of 29, with a number of them being A-plus saves.

“The third period, all of our 20’s came through,” Meyers said. “And that’s what our 20’s need to do.”

With the win, Melfort now makes it 10 straight games with at least a point, going 8-0-1-1 over that stretch. They’ll be back in action on Wednesday when they host Melville.
