Night of Hope to support Porcupine Hope Fund

Dec 16, 2022 | 12:53 PM

The Porcupine Plain Blues senior hockey team is set to host the Tisdale Ramblers Saturday for the special ‘Night of Hope’ game.

The contest will raise money for the Porcupine Hope Fund, which supports critically ill people, in and around the area.

“I think it hits home to everybody in town to help out and stuff, that’s your small-town mentality, to help when everybody’s close together,” said team manager Duane Thorpe.

The game will feature Calcutta shootouts, raffle draws, silent and live auctions, and a guaranteed $1500 50/50.

Some of that will have alumni players, as well as interactive games for the crowd.

“There are some people who have just come out to support, that’s all we are looking for right, even if you just want to come out and have some entertainment that night,” added Thorpe.

While the hope fund only began this October, the Blues have done fundraisers in the past for similar causes.

Earlier this year they had a burger sale where they sold 400 in just an hour and a half, which was their fourth fundraiser of the year, having previously donated $3,500 to three different organizations in town.

Meanwhile, they fundraised for a lady in town last year, accumulating $30,000.

Thorpe explained he hopes this game becomes an annual event as the community has already shown how much they care.

“Most of it is to provide financial support for the locals. There’s a lot of critical illness going on in the last couple of years, and so we just have to help with the travel and stuff. Some people are staying numerous days in hospitals, and their families have to stay with them and everything like that. Hopefully, we’ll make some money and get some people out there and then empty their piggy banks.”

Businesses in Melfort and Tisdale have donated items, while provincial businesses like SaskPower and SaskTel have joined in with some autographed jerseys.

In a final statement, Thorpe told northeastNOW his players have been waiting all year for this, as their excitement is showing for the big game.

“They’ve been talking about it ever since the start of the year, this is their big game and it should be a packed crowd, so that’ll be huge for them. I think they’re all looking forward to the shootout after to see who just gets some bragging rights in the dressing room too.”

Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
