Nipawin Jubilee Arena project nearly finished

A major expansion to the Jubilee Arena in Nipawin is almost finished.

“I would say the project’s about 90 per cent complete,” Derek Seckinger, program director with Nipawin’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The expansion includes four large dressing rooms, with amenities including showers and water fill stations. It also includes a new stand alone lobby for the arena.

The $1.67 million project is going to make a big difference, Seckinger said.

“This is a substantial addition to our facility,” he said. “Most of our tournaments are around about eight teams right now. And we’re hoping that this should at least take them to 12 or more.”

Nipawin’s Jubilee and Centennial Arenas are joined, but the Jubilee did not have dressing rooms.

Seckinger said other improvements include two boiler systems and a hot water heater, rubber flooring throughout and Truss Core walls.

“It’s all very easily maintainable and cleanable,” Seckinger said.

The project has been delayed because of supply chain issues. Seckinger said they originally hoped to have it finished last October.

“I would tell people that they have to bear with timing due to supply chain issues and everything else. And honestly, it will be done when it gets done, would be the best way to put it. But we are hoping for February 1,” Seckinger said.

But while timing is affected, Seckinger said they expect they’ll come in at or below the budget of $1.67 million.

“It’ll increase tournament volumes, probably one and a half times that we would be able to handle,” he said. “We’re excited and looking forward to our tournaments that we get to have once it gets going.”

The Centennial Arena was built in 1967, and is Nipawin’s main arena, while the Jubilee Arena was added in 1985.
