Script Flipped

Mustangs struggle to find positives in lopsided loss to Broncos

Jan 15, 2023 | 9:26 AM

The script got flipped on the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday night in Humboldt.

After their big 8-4 win on Friday night over Humboldt, the Mustangs fell 6-2 to the Broncos at the EPA just a night later.

Humboldt didn’t open the scoring until the 9:11 mark of the first period when Cage Newans scored on the powerplay, and Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said things were looking ok up to that point.

“First ten minutes I thought we were decent,” he said. “And then we just couldn’t find her.”

Maddox Amaral made it 2-0 for Humboldt a few minutes later before Ryan Duguay cut the lead to 2-1 late in the first. However, that only lasted less than a minute as Noah Barlage scored with less than a minute to play in the first and made it 3-1.

Joel Favreau took over for James Venne in net for Melfort after the first period and would go on to stop 28 of 31 the rest of the way. Venne made 14 saves in the first period.

Humboldt wouldn’t look back from there as Alec Saretzky and Amaral added another couple in the second before the teams traded markers in the third. Zac Somers scored for the Mustangs while Spencer Bell added the other Humboldt goal.

Meyers said they’ll basically burn the game film of the game that saw the Mustangs get outshot 48-25.

“This ones done, yep,” Meyers said. “We’ve got a game on Tuesday and we’ve got to get ready for that.”

Melfort will visit Notre Dame on Tuesday night, looking to get back into the win column.
