Mustangs earn massive win over Bombers in wild affair at Palace

Jan 25, 2023 | 9:35 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have won their third straight home game after a 5-4 decision over the Flin Flon Bombers on Tuesday night.

It was a wild affair that saw the Mustangs score four goals in just a minute into the second period. It was a 2-2 game after one period where Melfort had just six shots to Flin Flon’s 16. Melfort would then score on their first two shots of the second period, chasing Bombers netminder Harmon Laser-Hume.

Ben Tkachuk had points on four of the Mustangs’ five goals on the evening and said while they were outshot 37-21 in the game, the shots on goal weren’t quite indicative of the result.

“We wanted to test their goalie out and I think we did a good job of it early on,” Tkachuk said. “And got some quality chances out of it and they went it.”

Clarke Huxley and Dawson Leroux scored in the first for Melfort, while Tkachuk’s first of the evening and Zac Somers 19th of the season put Melfort up 4-2 after two periods.

The Bombers would do everything they could in the third to come back in the game, even with a little help from the referees who sent the Mustangs to the box for a total of eight Bomber powerplays on the night, including five in the third period. They ended up scoring both of their goals on powerplays.

Tkachuk said it was a “character third period”.

“Proud of every guy in that room,” he said. “We stepped up huge on a couple huge penalty kills, worked our tails off.”

Tkachuk’s second of the night came early in the third before the Bombers began their comeback.

The win is Melfort’s third in a row on home ice. They’ll look to win their first road game in three tries on Friday when they visit the Weyburn Red Wings.

Melfort is now 21-12-5-2 on the season and sits fifth in the SJHL.
