Wyatt Day honoured as SJHL RBC Community Ambassador

Jan 30, 2023 | 1:07 PM

Melfort Mustangs forward, Wyatt Day, was honoured this past Saturday, prior to a game against the Humboldt Broncos.

Day was recognized as a member of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) RBC Community Ambassador team.

“It’s an honour to have that because guys do put in the work,” Day told northeastNOW. “It’s good to be out in the community, it feels good to be that person, and it feels good to really make this place your home.”

This marks the fifth year of partnership between the two organizations, as it highlights the league’s athletes, who are making positive differences in their communities.

One player from each SJHL team was named, who “has shown exemplary commitment to their community and demonstrated exemplary leadership both on and off the ice.”

“The community gives out a lot and it feels really good when you can be recognized for giving back to them and showing them that they give you a home to stay in and live here,” Day added.

Each Ambassador is celebrated at an RBC Game Night (Day’s on Jan. 28) and is honoured by a donation from RBC to a school in their local community.

For Day, a total of $1,000 was given to Reynolds Central School in Melfort.

“There are kids that come to the game, and they really look up to you, they’re always saying hi, and they’re always so happy to see you. It makes the highlight of their week that they’re talking to a Melfort Mustang, and that’s just amazing to me and makes me feel really proud as a hockey player that people are looking up to you,” he said.

Fans will be able to vote online for the RBC Community Ambassador of their choice to be honoured as the recipient of the RBC Community Award at the end of the SJHL regular season.

This comes with an additional $2,500 donation from RBC, in the player’s name to a similar cause.

Day explained as much as ‘good deeds’ aren’t a competition, he sure wouldn’t mind beating out the rest of the guys in the league.

“It’d be really good to give to the community and show them that they do deserve it and that everything that they’ve done for us is worth it,” he said.

“We get out in schools and we’re playing with the kids and we’re making appearances. I always try to go the extra mile and if a kid’s got a birthday and he wants somebody there I always try to show up. Just make sure that everybody feels like we’re here for them.”
