Jackson’s January leads to Goalie of the Month recognition

Feb 2, 2023 | 9:46 AM

Jackson Fellner’s “month of firsts” is catching the eyes of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

With a Goalie of the Week honour already on his resume, the 19-year-old Regina product and Nipawin Hawks’ puckstopper was named the Goalie of Month for January by the SJHL on Feb. 1. Fellner said the 2023 year has started with a bang.

“It’s been a month of firsts for me,” Fellner told northeastNOW. “First shutout, first goalie of the week, first goalie of the month, it feels good.”

The former Weyburn Red Wing and Melfort Mustangs’ first shutout was on Jan. 13, a 4-0 win over Melville. Fellner was named the week’s top goalie that following Monday. Now upon the news of being the top player in his position for January where the Hawks went 7-2-1 in the month Fellner said he hopes he’s making the most of his chance to be the number one goaltender for an SJHL club.

“Tad [Kozun, Nipawin head coach] told me that I’d get an opportunity and I definitely have and I think I have done the best I can with the opportunities he’s given me, and I am thankful for that,” he said.

During the month that included a seven-game winning streak for Nipawin, Fellner won five games in eight starts, picked up the shutout, and also had a goals-against-average of 2.38 and a save-percentage of 9.14.

Fellner has climbed into the top-10 of SJHL goalies in most statistics and the Hawks have solidified themselves into seventh place, well inside the playoff picture. The month of January did end with a thud courtesy of back-to-back losses against the La Ronge Ice Wolves. Fellner said a week-long break to shake off the weekend and prepare for Flin Flon on Saturday was a goal of the last few days.

“We’re just looking forward to this weekend at Flin Flon and get back to it and start a new streak,” Fellner concluded.

Saturday’s game will face off at 7:30 p.m. from the Whitney Forum, the pregame show of Rona Nipawin Hawks Hockey begins at 7:15 p.m. on 750 Beach Radio.
