Reynolds Playground Committee raises funds for an adaptable playground

Melfort will soon have a new adaptable playground.

In the fall of 2022, Reynolds Central School put together a committee to make improvements to their current park.

Because of an increase in student enrollment, the 10-year-old playground is unable to sustain all students who want to enjoy it. Also, due to its age, much of the equipment has been removed due to safety concerns.

School Community Council (SCC) Chair Lacey Walker told northeastNOW the project will consist of four picnic tables, one of which will be wheelchair accessible, but the plans don’t stop there.

“As more funds become available, we will be adding a large deck, a free climbing structure, a ninja-type obstacle course, a double palmetto swing, and a play panel.”

In order to complete the project, the committee will need to fundraise $165,000. Walker said the Northeast has been incredibly supportive so far.

“Because of this support, we have been able to raise over $40,000 dollars in funds as of the end of March. We have also applied for multiple grants and are hopeful that we will be the recipient of funding from some of those as well.”

The goal is to have the play structure up in its entirety by the fall of 2024.

Meanwhile, the City of Melfort will be making improvements to the crosswalk this summer to improve safety for students. This work is thanks to an $89,000 SGI Pedestrian Safety Grant.
