Mustangs acquire 2005-born D-man after trade with Canucks

Jul 5, 2023 | 11:48 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have bolstered the future of their D-core after a trade with the Calgary Canucks out of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

The Stangs have acquired 2005-born defenceman Cole Unger, and in exchange will send a player development fee out west.

In 36 games this past season with Calgary, Unger scored one goal and added six assists for seven points, before on to add one assist in two games in the playoffs, as well.

“Cole is a skilled, puck moving defenceman that already has a year of Junior hockey under his belt,” said Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins, in a press release sent to northeastNOW. “We believe his experience and his mobility will be solid assets to our blue line this season and in the future.”

The 5-11, 170-pound, Dunmore, Alta. product is a former 10th round pick of the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL Draft.

He spent the 2021/22 season with the Southern Alberta Hockey Academy (SAHA) U18 Prep team, where he notched 11 assists in 35 games, prior to joining the AJHL as a 17-year-old later that year.
