Nipawin Evergreen to host 2024 Provincial Senior’s Championships

Sep 15, 2023 | 10:28 AM

The Nipawin Evergreen Golf Course (NEGC) received some exciting news on Thursday, as they were announced as the hosts for the 2024 Senior Women’s (50+) and Men’s (55+), as well as the Men’s Mid-Masters (40+) Provincial Championships.

The Golf Saskatchewan event will run next year from July 23-25, as the club gets set to host three separate tournaments all at the same time.

“Fully thrilled and excited to do the seniors tournament here where we actually run three different tournaments at once with the senior men’s, senior women’s and the men’s mid-masters. It’s a fantastic field with very competent golfers who are definitely strong enough to send on to Nationals and do very well there,” explained NEGC president Kevin Duchscherer.

“We as a club have always enjoyed having a great course to play on for many years now and we’ll be working to make our course the best that it absolutely can be. Having events like this definitely gives us an opportunity not only to participate in some pretty cool events but to take pride in what we actually are blessed with having.”

Golf Saskatchewan last hosted an event in Nipawin in 2019 when the Saskatchewan Junior Championships were held at Evergreen.

The Senior Women’s Championships took place at the course in 1995, however, the events were separate then, as the Senior Men’s Championships have never been hosted in Nipawin.

Duchscherer seemed to predict the future in a way back in June when he spoke about bringing a National Senior’s event to the community.

“I was hinting more at being able to bring the national seniors as opposed to the provincial but that being said, I am still very excited that we are offered the opportunity and we’re able to get the contract signed to actually host the provincial senior,” he told northeastNOW.

“I’m still crossing my fingers and hoping that we’re able to have conversations in the upcoming future with Golf Canada about possibly having a national seniors event here.”

Most recently, the course was the venue for the 2023 Golf Canada NextGen Prairie Championship, which played a role in bringing the seniors to town.

Although it was a Golf Canada-sanctioned event, the two organizations work very closely and word travels fast.

“With the volunteers coming out, the host committee developing certain things and with some local sponsorship, it made it a pretty easy decision just to kind of have an initial discussion with the management group, and obviously with the golf course. It came together quite quickly, so we are very excited to be coming back to Nipawin,” added Golf Saskatchewan executive director, Brian Lee.

Registration for all the championships in 2024 will open on the first official day of the golf season, April 15.

Duchscherer, who is also a senior competitor who plays in the event every year, is hopeful to also put his name in the ring on his home course.

“I’m looking forward to being able to test myself against those golfers on my home track and just see how well I can do.”
