Melfort Multi-K celebrates 12th annual event

It was a record-breaking event for this year’s Multi-K as hundreds of people from the northeast and beyond came to Melfort.

The annual races took place this past Saturday with nearly 500 people participating.

Race Director Allison Rogers told northeastNOW all of the hard work behind the scenes paid off when they saw the racers line up.

“We had 450 people. We had a great turnout,” she said. “We actually think that we set a course record in the 21.1 km race.”

Close to 40 racers finished the 21.1 km which was won by Curtis Glanville of Melfort. More than 120 people participated in the Kids 1 km Fun Run with Parker Johnson finishing first.

With the event nearly sold out this year, the ideas of Dr. Van der Ross have helped the community come together not just for race day but during the summer months when people begin training.

The Multi-K was a dream of Van der Ross’s who adopted the idea of promoting fitness and health in Melfort.

Rogers joked that due to how big a production the event is every year, it is almost like planning a wedding.

“We’ve got a committee of these people, probably close to 100 volunteers over the course of three days leading up to the race,” she said.

It’s not only Melfort residents who participated as this year’s event hosted racers from British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba.

Although seeing people gather from across the country is rewarding, Rogers said her favourite time of the day is the 1 km kids fun run.

“The kids are just so excited and so proud of themselves. It’s the best part,” she said. “You see a lot of them doing the 1 km and then they go on to the 5 km. You sort of start them young and they just sort of stick with it.”
