Better than a turkey on Thanksgiving

Mustangs complete weekend sweep of Red Wings

Oct 7, 2023 | 11:30 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are thankful for still being unbeaten as the 2023/24 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season has reached the Thanksgiving mark.

For Melfort, they remained perfect by completing a weekend sweep at home against the visiting Weyburn Red Wings.

The 6 and 0 Mustangs won 5-4 in a shootout on Friday, before etching out a 4-3 victory on Saturday.

Stangs’ forward Ryan Duguay was a key factor in Saturday night’s win, as he extended his goal-scoring streak to five games by burying two, including the eventual game-winner, past Weyburn netminder Eric Kahl.

Duguay, a second-year member of the Blue and Green, has now scored in all five of his appearances this season.

The Edmonton, Alta. product, currently ranks second in the league in goals (all of whom have played more games than him).

Three of those markers happened this weekend, all of which were on the powerplay, against a Red Wings penalty kill that entered Melfort, having previously killed off 27 of 28.

After Weyburn had to face the Mustangs’ powerplay, however, they allowed five powerplay markers on 17 chances.

That’s even more of a surprise when you consider the fact that the Stangs started the year 0 for 16 on the man advantage.

The Blue and Green had 92 shots on the weekend, including 48 on Saturday night, outshooting their opponent by 27 when combining both contests.

The organization’s backstop, James Venne, had 26 saves in his own right during the latter game, earning himself his sixth victory of the season.

For the club, they are now done with their four-game homestand, which included five of their first six at the Northern Lights Palace, as they’re set to head out on the road for three of their next four.

The team will next play this coming weekend, when they visit the Kindersley Klippers for back-to-back road games, Friday and Saturday night.

Both contests will begin at 7:30 p.m. and can be listened to on 105 CJVR as Ben Tompkins has the call.
