Somers scores in return, Mustangs exact revenge on North Stars

The Melfort Mustangs were able to get back in the win column on Wednesday night, after defeating the Battlefords North Stars by a score of 4-1.

The victory meant a little bit more than usual for the now 8 and 1 Mustangs for a couple of reasons, as they were able to avenge multiple losses.

Melfort was coming off their first loss of the season, which came at the hands of the Kllipers in Kindersley on Saturday night, while their returning players were able to exact revenge from last season’s playoff loss to the North Stars.

Last night’s contest marked the first time the organization had clashed with Battlefords (now 5 and 5) since they got knocked out of round two back in April.

“Obviously, getting swept in the playoffs last year doesn’t sit well with any of the guys returning this year, so that lit a little bit of fire in our stomachs coming in tonight and that obviously motivated us to get the job done,” said Stangs’ assistant captain, Zac Somers.

Somers, a hometown product and returning player for his team from last year, was also coming back into the lineup on Wednesday, after having missed his club’s previous four contests.

It didn’t appear that he had been away, however, as he opened the scoring in the game, just under six minutes into the first period.

“Obviously, two to three weeks off gets to a guy, but I honestly didn’t feel too bad out there. A little bit of a sluggish start, but throughout the game, I just kept getting better, and I’m looking forward to Friday to take a couple more steps forward,” he added.

Hayden Prosofsky scored his first two career SJHL goals on the night, while James Venne stopped 29 of 30 shots in the contest, as he was just 38 seconds away from his first shutout of the season.

“He’s one of the best goalies in the league for a reason and he comes in night in and night out and he gets the job done,” Somers explained about his netminder. “It’s always nice having him as our backbone, if something does go wrong, we know he’s there for us. Great guy, great player and we love having him around.”

The Stangs will now take Thursday off before heading to La Ronge on Friday for their first meeting with the (2-8-1) Ice Wolves at the Mel Hegland Uniplex this season.

The Blue and Green last played them on September 22, during an 8-4 home-opening route, where all eight of their goals came in the first half of the game.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with the pre-game show beginning at 7:15 p.m. as Ben Tompkins has the call on 105 CJVR.
