The Nipawin Hawks picked up their first regular season win in Estevan since 2017 on Saturday edging the Bruins 2-1 in a shootout.

The last win, not in the playoffs for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club was Jan. 25, 2017, when the Hawks blanked Estevan 5-0. It’s been eight games since that win. Former Bruin Evan Forrest scored the shootout winner for his new team. Joel Mabin forced overtime with a penalty shot goal with just three minutes remaining in regulation. Forrest said getting the win was important after a lacklustre performance Friday in Weyburn.

“It started a little slow, but we rallied back, worked hard, and got the win,” he said after the game.

With no goals scored in the three-on-three overtime, Forrest admitted he was excited for the chance to be chosen in the shootout against his former teammate Jackson Miller.

“I knew I was going five-hole right when that overtime buzzer went, Forrest chuckled. “I have went five-hole so many times on him I just knew it was going to go in.”

Mabin and Braxton Buckberger couldn’t beat Miller in the shootout, Hawks’ netminder Damon Cunningham stopped all three Bruins plus 41 of 42 shots during the game and regulation. With a chance to end the game, Forrest was confident and after he was able to beat Miller to secure the extra point. He said the moment will stick with him for a while.

“I was cloud nine, I was so happy the boys were able to rally with me and we were able to get the win. It means so much,” he said.

The Hawks will conclude their three-game road trip Sunday afternoon in Notre Dame against the Hounds. Faceoff is at 4:30 p.m., the pregame show of Duplex Furniture and Appliances Hawks Hockey begins at 4:15 p.m. on 750 Beach Radio.
