It is with sadness the family of Margaret Merriman announces her peaceful passing at Melfort Hospital on June 18, 2023 at the age of 82.
Margaret was born on June 17, 1941 in Foam Lake, SK and grew up in the Insinger district on the family farm with her parents Nick and Mary Snatinsky, and her brothers Peter and Steve. Life on the farm involved hard work which instilled a strong work ethic throughout her life. She would fondly mention times stooking bales with her Dad, wearing her heavy wool sweater which kept her cool on hot days.
Margaret was married in 1961, raised a family of four children in Theodore, SK and provided every comfort imaginable to them. At noon hour during the week, all four children would walk the two blocks home from school to enjoy a full dinner Mom had prepared. After school we could look forward to fresh donuts dipped in sugar, chocolate bundt cake, cookies and scuffles to name a few. She excelled at baking which was why her walnut chiffon cakes with seven-minute frosting was a popular item at bake sales in Theodore with the Ukrainian Ladies Aid, of which she was a member. Mom also loved to cook and would take a recipe and make it her own with a few secret ingredients. She was notorious for the “heaping, heaping tablespoon” which was challenging yet amusing to those trying to duplicate her recipes. Her family and anyone who visited were blessed with great home cooked meals and baking.
Mom loved the time she spent outdoors tending her large vegetable gardens, fertilizing, watering and mowing the lush lawn and planting and tending to her many colourful flower beds. Mom’s large garden in Theodore and at the farm resulted in more hours spent canning and preserving food for her family to enjoy throughout the winter months.
Margaret enjoyed playing cards, fishing and was an avid golfer. Her creativity was evident in her warm crocheted afghans, embroidered cloths, quilts and paintings and the Ukrainian Easter pysanka she decorated.
Before and while raising a family, she worked at different jobs including as a telephone operator with SaskTel in Theodore, as a clerk at Agnew Surpass in Yorkton and decaling ceramics with Diana May Clay in Theodore where her artistic talents flourished.
She was proud of her Ukrainian heritage and celebrated Ukrainian Orthodox Christmas and Easter each year. Her children currently enjoy those traditions she passed along.
Margaret had a good sense of humour, and she loved sharing in a good laugh. In her later years she was affectionately referred to as “Spicy Margaret”. If music was playing, she would be humming along or singing and tapping her toe.
Margaret is predeceased by her parents Nick and Mary and her brother Peter.
Left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life are her loving family.
