With less than two minutes to go, a hazy sun peered through the clouds and in what seemed like a moment of destiny, the North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) came out the victors on the home gridiron with a 35-21 win over Prince Albert’s St. Mary’s Marauders.

“Very happy for the Grade 12s right now, the new first year of this new league and our goal is to play in some home playoff games and we did, so we’re extremely happy the way shook down today,” said Vikings Head Coach Mike Humenny.

The North Saskatchewan Football League (NSFL) saw the teams in its inaugural championship matchup fighting it down to the whistle, but St. Mary’s Head Coach Curt Hundeby acknowledge his team, who battled hard just couldn’t match their opponents’ strength.

“Anytime it’s your last game, it’s tough,” he said.

“For a game like this, where it really went back and forth, thought we had a chance there in the fourth quarter to lock it up, we just didn’t finish like we needed to.”

The teams had been tied in the third quarter with the Marauders taking the lead, but in the end, it was the home team who took home the cup.

“The season ended up well,” said Hummeny.

“We were able to host this playoff game, which was outstanding and we’re going to play for another weekend at the provincial semi-final in Saskatoon.”

The Vikings will meet the undefeated Aden Bowman Bears from Saskatoon in the semi-final contest with kickoff at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at SMF Field. The winner of that game will move on to the Provincial Finals on Nov. 11 against either Weyburn or Greenall from Balgonie.
