Mustangs searching for higher level of consistency as quarter of season now complete

The Melfort Mustangs host the Estevan Bruins on Wednesday night at the Northern Lights Palace, as both clubs look to prevent a losing streak.

Melfort is coming off a 3-2 overtime loss against the Yorkton Terriers in Kamsack on Saturday, while the Bruins last played on Friday versus the Battlefords North Stars, in a 5-2 defeat.

The Mustangs will be searching for a higher level of consistency in their play, in what has been a busy part of their schedule.

“It’ll be a tough game and we have to be ready for it,” said Stangs’ forward, Rhett Hamilton. “We have been on and off but nothing has been really horrible, we just need to play a little bit harder and have a bit more jam.”

The Blue and Green began their season 7 and 0, but have since gone 3-3-1 to finish their first quarter of the season.

That stretch has included eight games in 16 days, with Wednesday’s contest marking the ninth game in 20 days, before they follow that up with five games in 10 days, as the SJHL showcase starts next week.

It hasn’t helped that the organization has also been banged up of late, as players are in and out of the roster, and up and down the lineup on a consistent basis.

“That’s pretty tough, but I mean, we do spend a lot of time as a team on off days, so everybody has a lot of good chemistry and wherever you are in the lineup, it doesn’t really matter, everybody’s just gotta play hard,” Hamilton added.

Despite Estevan only having a record of 4-6-2 at the moment, Hamilton said they can’t take them lightly, considering they are the only team in the league to have a netminder on their roster who was a nominee for last year’s goalie of the year, in Cam Hrdlicka.

“I’ve heard that they’re pretty good, I got a couple of buddies on that team too, so I’m excited to play them,” Hamilton told northeastNOW. “We’ll just have to play the way we do and I’m sure we’ll be able to win… we’ll definitely just want to get a lot of movement cross-crease and kind of expose them going north-south.”

Puck drop for the first of four matchups between the two clubs this season is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
