Mustangs and Broncos victorious, Ice Wolves suffer blowout loss

The 2023 SJHL Showcase has now reached its halfway point as a day and a half of the event is officially in the books.

Day two featured four games, ranging from start points of 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

For the Mustangs, Ice Wolves and Broncos, they all played their first of two games of the Showcase on Tuesday, as two out of the three came away with two points.

According to Humboldt head coach, Scott Barney, getting a win is important when your team is trying to showcase their abilities.

“It was a good 20-guy effort, overall a good team effort and we had scoring throughout the lineup and that’s kind of important here, so I’m happy to see those guys have success.”

Melfort started off the day with a 3-1 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds, while the Ice Wolves and the Broncos didn’t play until the late afternoon.

Unfortunately for La Ronge, they suffered a 7-0 defeat to the Broncos, which is their fourth loss in a row.

Head Coach Kevin Kaminski chose to look at the positives after the loss, as he understands the opportunity in front of his players.

“The showcase is obviously for the players. It’s a great opportunity for them to show their stuff and hopefully get some talks from colleges and get opportunities,” he told northeastNOW.

“For ourselves, obviously we’re struggling right now, but at times we play very good hockey, so the intensity, care factor, and passion need to get better. We got to start trusting each other in our systems and just do our own job, the old saying less is more will help us both individually and as a team.”

All three teams will get another opportunity to try and show their best stuff, as each club will play their second and final contest on Wednesday.

For Barney, no matter what the score is, playing unselfishly and for each other will show more in a game to the scouts, than trying to do it all yourself.

“We’re pretty hard on them when it comes to good habits and just playing the game the right way,” he said. “If you do that you’ll have success and I think that showed, you play right, you get rewarded with some goals, some good forechecks and get good turnovers, which I thought was good to see.”

After two periods of play, Humboldt led the Melville Millionaires 4-2.
