Weekend Sweep

Mustangs put up touchdown in dominant win at Notre Dame

The Melfort Mustangs walked into the Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox on Saturday night, for the first time this season.

The Mustangs seemed to love the olympic sized ice, as they crushed the Notre Dame Hounds, putting up a touchdown in a 7-2 victory.

With the win, it completed the weekend sweep for Melfort, as they’re now 4-0 against their opposition this year.

“It’s never easy coming to Notre Dame with the big ice surface and it was our third game in four nights, but I thought every player from top to bottom came out and worked hard, so that was awesome,” said assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

“We have their number this year and it’s good to have any team’s number, no matter what position they are in the standings.”

The game started well for the Blue and Green, as they scored three straight in the first 14 minutes, putting them with an early three-goal lead.

The Hounds would eventually tighten that gap to two on two separate occasions, including a 4-2 game six minutes into the final period.

Notre Dame would then give up another three straight, this time to end the contest, as the Stangs put up a touchdown for a five-goal victory.

“When you can start with a two-goal lead off the get-go (six minutes in), that’s awesome and it just gets the juices going and the boys are flowing, so that’s awesome,” Scherger added.

Logan Belton had four points on the night as he’s now accumulated 12 in his last four since being promoted to the top line (because of the Duguay injury).

Meanwhile, Hudson Norris scored his first goal as a member of the Melfort Mustangs (and the SJHL), and Kristian Coombs picked up his third win in a row (also his third career win), as every Mustang seemed to be in on the action.

Melfort also played great defensively, giving up only a combined 12 shots through the first two periods and 24 through the full 60.

The club will now have three days off before they get right back to the playing surface on Wednesday when they host the Estevan Bruins at the Northern Lights Palace.
