Mustangs expect more consistent effort second time around against Bruins

The Melfort Mustangs are back in action Wednesday night when they host the Estevan Bruins.

The contest will mark the second meeting between the two clubs this season, both of which will have come at the Northern Lights Palace, as the Blue and Green hope to avenge an earlier Nov. 1 loss.

“I think every game is crucial to defend home ice, I think with the fans and the community support, it’s the least we could do, so we’re going to do our absolute best to get the result we want,” explained Stangs’ forward Hudson Norris.

“We watched some video, so now we gotta pay attention and know who’s out there, obviously they have certain players that are pretty strong, but we have a really strong back end, so as long as we play our game and everyone does their role we’ll do fine.”

The Mustangs’ previous defeat against the Bruins was a back-and-forth 6-5 affair, which represented the most goals Melfort has allowed all season, home or away.

Now, the team is coming off a weekend sweep of the Notre Dame Hounds, albeit the league’s worst, as they’ve gained some confidence for this particular weekday matchup.

“I think there’s a lot of great leaders on the team that bring it every game and I think that’s a tribute to them, how they show the team the way to bring it every night, so that’s definitely one of the reasons why,” Norris added.

“Everyone’s just gotta have higher attention to detail and really just try to do their jobs and trust each other, which I think is all you can do. Just play our game because we know we can play with any team in this league, so we’re confident.”

Meanwhile, Estevan has been wildly inconsistent all year, as they sit at .500 on the nose and one place back of a playoff spot, losing their last game to the Klippers in Kindersley on Saturday.

As for the Stangs, they have won three of their last four. Kristian Coombs will go for his fourth consecutive victory and Norris will look to build off his first career SJHL goal, which came on Saturday in Wilcox.

“It was great and it was well overdue, definitely a great moment and happy to go and get the next one,” Norris told northeastNOW. “It’d be great to pile on some wins here and we’re all excited to go… it’s one of our last six games until the Christmas break, so we want to bring it every game until then, and we’ve been working hard, so it should be a good one.”
