Carrot River signs agreement to purchase elementary school

Jan 10, 2024 | 12:00 PM

The Town of Carrot River has signed a purchase agreement to buy the elementary school from the North East School Division.

Elementary students will be moving into the brand-new K to 12 school currently being built.

Community Development Manager Miranda Blaber told northeastNOW the town will be holding a series of community engagement meetings to determine what to do with the elementary school in the future.

“[Residents] can come forward and have a conversation about the elementary school building and property, and what people might think that space could be utilized for to best benefit our community,” Blaber explained.

“We’re thinking big and broad, we’re not just thinking community services, we’re thinking ‘is there a business out there looking for a facility or a space, maybe there’s a brilliant idea out there that we just have not thought of and someone is just sitting on,” added Blaber.

The town will hold some engagement sessions in the future once the transfer of ownership is finalized, and then do a call for proposals before hopefully awarding the contract. Blaber said the town is open to suggestions.

Zoning and land surveying will have to be taken into account with any proposal. The purchase price for the property has not been released.

Blaber said the purchase will be good for the community.

“There is a lot of space there, there’s an excellent building there, and the property is going to be developed in some way, shape, or form that is going to be beneficial to our community,” Blaber explained. “To me, that’s just exciting.”

Construction continues on the new K to 12 school, and Blaber said it’s nice to see the progress on the facility. The new building will feature some added benefits, thanks to some generous donations from the community. That includes a multi-use gymnasium performing arts theatre, an enhanced industrial arts lab, and more.

Blaber said the new facility will also be more open and have more natural light throughout. The old Grade 5-12 building will be demolished one everyone moves over to the new facility.

Blaber didn’t have an exact date for completion of construction on the new facility.
