2024 SJHL Trade Deadline

Blevins confident in current Mustangs group

The Melfort Mustangs had a fairly quiet trade deadline day this year, as they didn’t make a single trade, but did make a couple of roster moves.

Melfort parted ways with forward/defenceman Wyatt Day, while picking up a pair of brothers from the Kindersley Klippers in Danton Cox and former Mustang Logan Cox.

According to head coach and general manager, Trevor Blevins, the organization is very confident in the current group and did not want to unnecessarily force a move.

“We are very happy with our group and feel we’ve got all the pieces of the makings of a team that can make a push,” he told northeastNOW. “We were open to upgrade but we didn’t feel that there was much out there to do that.”

Ultimately, the Mustangs have made a considerable amount of moves throughout the season, including but not limited to the acquisitions of Nolan Henderson and Clay Sleeva, along with bringing back Tye Evans.

For Blevins and his group, he knows how hard it is to find an entire locker room that is bought in, on the same page and playing for each other.

“We like our group the way it is right now, we have a great dressing room and great culture, and I think that’s half your battle when you’re looking to make a deep run in playoffs,” he added.

“Our guys now get to play a little longer together with less disruption and I think everyone can be quite a bit more relaxed and play with more confidence because of that.”

Currently, Melfort is tied for second in the SJHL standings and has only failed to get a point once in their last twelve games.

This has also all come without three regulars David Rioux and Mathieu Pigeon, as well as Ryan Duguay, who was leading the league in goals and points before his injury.

“We are quite happy with the talent, the work ethic and the attitude that we have… if you’re gonna make a change, you got to make sure it’s an upgrade,” explained Blevins.

“It was nice, however, that the two Cox boys became available to pick up because it’s going to be a nice fit for the both of them in the meantime. We were just fortunate for that to kind of fall in our lap and we are excited for both of them to join us.”
