Naming rights up for grabs

Melfort investigating whether to sell naming rights to facilities

The CIty of Melfort is gauging interest on the sale of naming rights to its municipal facilities and properties, including the Northern Lights Palace.

City manager Adam Homes told northeastNOW they have a lot of great facilities, and it would be nice to partner with companies or corporations for naming rights.

“Generate a bit of revenue for the city, offset a bit of our operating costs, and then that would allow us to reallocate money into capital and continue to invest in those facilities,” Homes explained.

Homes said the current expression of interest is generally focused on community services buildings. Other potential facilities that could see naming rights up for grabs in this round include the Spruce Haven skate park, soccer fields, ball diamonds, and dog park.

Should the idea come to fruition, the winning parties would have their name and logo associated with the facilities. The city, in a news release, said the chosen sponsor would ‘collaborate with the city in a mutually beneficial partnership, enhancing visibility and reputation for both parties.’

Though the first thought in the potential sale of naming rights usually focuses on corporations, Homes said the city is open to suggestions, including having naming rights in honour of an individual that has passed away.

The expression of interest application, according to Homes, is simple. Those interested can describe their company, or themselves, describe what the proposal is, and then the city can narrow it down and finally enter into negotiations.

“This is our first time doing this, sticking our toes into the water a little bit and just seeing what interest is out there for this type of opportunity,” Homes said.

The city will also be revitalizing some neighbourhood parks and the Windsor Waterfowl Park in the future.

“We’ve got some of our existing facilities that we’re looking at, but there’s also opportunities for some great future projects as well,” added Homes.

The current expression of interest is open for a month.
