Ruth Marion (Anderson) Davis passed away in the Shaunavon Hospital & Care Centre in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan on January 19, 2024, with loved ones by her side.
Ruth was born on November 22, 1931, at Shaunavon Union Hospital to Ruth and (Johannes) Alfred John Anderson. When Ruth was four, the family moved from the original homestead to a new location to be closer to Anglo School southeast of Shaunavon. Ruth led an exciting life, completing Grades Nine and Ten by correspondence, and working for room and board in Shaunavon to complete her High School. Following graduation, she taught as a Study Supervisor at Crossfell School. In 1951 she attended Nursing School at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and after her RN exams, worked in Gynaecology, and became Charge Nurse of an Outpatient Department. In 1956, Ruth accepted a bursary for Public Health Nursing at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and then worked with the Nova Scotia Department of Health in Sydney Mines. She returned to Saskatchewan in 1960 to nurse in Swift Current, before transferring to the Prince Albert Health Region to work as an Assistant Public Health Supervisor. Here she met Lionel Davis, a Sanitation Officer for the Prince Albert Health Region. They were married in Salem Lutheran Church in Shaunavon on April 27, 1963, before moving to Saskatoon. Lionel earned his Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Saskatchewan, working on weekends, while Ruth worked part-time in the University Hospital. When Lionel convocated, they returned to Shaunavon where Lionel taught at Shaunavon High School, and Ruth worked the summer months at Shaunavon Union Hospital. Within three years, they moved to Consul, where Lionel accepted a Principalship position. In 1972, they moved to White Fox, to be closer to Lionel’s mom, and Lionel became White Fox School Principal. During these years Richard, Dwayne and Christine were born. Ruth always volunteered in the communities where she lived, including church, recreation, housing authority, library involvement, and at one time served on 21 committees in one year. In 1980, she received the White Fox Kinsmen Citizen of the Year Award. In 1984, after upgrading, Ruth returned to the workforce working as Coordinator of Nipawin Home Care for ten years before retirement. In her spare time Ruth painted, drew, did water colour drawings, sang, baked, sewed, even her own wedding dress, crocheted, knitted, and enjoyed writing letters and family histories. Ruth was very proud of her Swedish heritage and customs.
