Mustangs complete series sweep over Hounds

The Melfort Mustangs walked away with a 3-1 victory on Thursday night in Wilcox, as they completed the season sweep over the Notre Dame Hounds.

The Mustangs won all five of the head-to-head matchups by a combined score of 26-9, as they repeatedly took care of business against the SJHL’s worst.

“It feels good, every point matters, so getting all the points from them, that’s awesome,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

For Melfort, this was their lone game in a 13-day stretch, as they hadn’t played since last Saturday, and won’t play again until next Saturday.

Because of this, it was extra important to get the win, which was a bit sloppy at times, so they didn’t have to stew for a long period of time.

“I wasn’t pretty at times, but I mean a win’s a win and you can always be happy with a win. I thought it was a little sloppy at times, but that happens on a big ice surface,” Scherger added.

“Come into this barn, you battle through it, we had lots of injuries again and were short-staffed, so good character check for the boys and it was good.”

The Stangs did have two affiliate players on the night, as the team now looks ahead to the SJHL/MJHL Showcase.

The event will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, as now seven players will head to Manitoba, with Clay Sleeva being added to the group yesterday, and they will be joined by their head coach Trevor Blevins.

“Have seven players and obviously Trevor gonna represent and that’s awesome, they all earned it, it’s well deserved and I wish them all the best there,” Scherger told northeastNOW.

James Venne made 27 of 28 stops on the night, as he continues his recent dominance, picking up his league-leading 21st win of the season.

Meanwhile, Aidyn Hutchinson and Ryan Duguay began to redevelop some chemistry, connecting on a pair of goals.

“The whole year Venne has been the backbone of this team, I keep saying that, but it’s the truth. He comes to practice he’s working hard, comes to games, he’s putting up a fight every night and so good for him,” said Scherger.

“It’s awesome for them to be playing together again after Duguay’s injury, especially on a big ice surface like this, they can create so much offense and they know exactly where each other are. It’s awesome that they’re finding good chemistry again.”

The Blue and Green are now four games through their year-long six-game road trip, as they’ve won two and lost two.
