Hawks drop two on the road

Nov 6, 2017 | 7:00 AM

The Nipawin Hawks’ pursuit of the Melfort Mustangs for top spot in the Sherwood Division hit a couple of speed bumps over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Hawks would lose 2-1 to the Notre Dame Hounds in Midale. Bryson Cecconi scored the lone goal for the Hawks with the assist from Austin Mikesch. Jake Anthony was in net.

On Sunday, the Hawks travelled to Estevan to face the Bruins. Nipawin would draw first blood at the 13:38 mark of the first period on a shot from Carter Doerksen. Keillan Olsen and Michael Grant provided the assist.

Estevan would respond with a pair of goals in the second period. With just over five minutes to play in the third period, Brandan Arnold would score the tying goal for the Hawks.

Five minutes of overtime play settled nothing and the game went to shootout. The Bruins opened the scoring on their second attempt and Keillan Olsen responded for the Hawks on the third. Both teams were stopped on their fourth attempts.

Logan Casavant took the puck for Nipawin’s fifth shot but would not find the back of the net, where Kaelan Holt made good on his last shot for the Bruins.

The final score was 3-2.

The Hawks are now two points back of the Mustangs in the Sherwood Division and fifth overall, but the Mustangs still have a game in hand.

The two teams will clash Friday, Nov. 10 in Melfort at the Northern Lights Palace.
