Community Futures Newsask challenging communities

Nov 9, 2017 | 4:00 PM

A trio of local organizations are hoping to win $3,000 towards a project of their choice.

Tisdale based Community Futures Newsask is holding their fourth “Challenge 4 Communities” contest with the most voted for initiative taking the top prize.

Manager Judy Childs said her organization helps fund smaller projects that wouldn’t get much funding otherwise.

“We recognize that there’s no funding for some of the smaller projects like daycares, [or] any kind of project that benefits seniors, neighbourhood groups, youth groups, or municipal groups,” Childs said.

This year’s entries are the Rotary Club of Melfort for their namesake park’s revitalization, Little Explorers Daycare in Tisdale, and the Friends of Stovel Park and their park upgrades in Melfort.

The contest is broken up into four steps. The first step consisted of a written essay, then a Facebook page had to be created, followed by a Youtube video promoting their project, and finally a 30 second radio advertisement.

Childs said Newsask’s challenge encouraged co-operation.

“It brings a community together because not everybody knows how Youtube works, so you call on the youth. It just gets the whole community involved and excited,” Childs said.

The first-place prize is $3,000, second is $2,000 and third will receive $1,000. Online voting by the public will decide the outcome. The final challenge is due Nov. 17.

Childs said the contest is a highlight for their organization.

“To see the excitement in the community when they have a project… is very rewarding,” she said.
