Success continues for Melfort Communities in Bloom

Melfort’s Communities in Bloom (CIB) organization continues to be one of the province’s best when it comes to beautification.

The group was the winner in the 5,000 to 10,000 population group in Saskatchewan in 2017. On Monday at Melfort’s monthly council meeting, group spokesperson Peggy George spoke of the group’s success and presented council with a wall plaque depicting four out of five blooms.

“We were really close to the top marks, we had done some different projects this year. The judges noticed and liked what we have done,” George said.

George said community flower pots and basic beautification were positive but the “community involvement” put them into the top of their category.

“There’s so much we take for granted in our community so when a new set of eyes comes into town and they have no involvement or reason to say nice things but they feel it, they see it and they recognize it. I always find that so valuable,” George said.

There was several points the judges pointed out for the city to improve but George said some of those suggestions are out of their committee’s hands.

“We can suggest to the city that they should have a tree inventory, but we can’t do it for them. We can suggest to the city that we need more ‘Welcome to Melfort’ signs on the outskirts of town,” George said.

The organization was involved in the CIB initiative since 2004. The group entered the contest five of those years winning their category each time.

Particpating communities are judged in five different categories; tidyness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaping and floral designs.
