Nov 15, 2017 | 11:00 AM

Entrepreneurs in Melfort have decided to push forward with a proposed Business Improvement District (BID).

During a public meeting Tuesday at the Legion, business owners in attendance voted on a motion for the Melfort Business Revitalization Corporation (MBRC) to propose the BID to city council. Community development officer Brent Lutz, is also a board member of the MBRC, he said his organization was motivated by the crowd.

“We were glad to hear someone put forward specific direction and for them to show support for it,” Lutz said.

The motion concluded a pair of meetings over the past couple weeks. The MBRC was developed when Melfort received Main Street Saskatchewan funding, which was eventually cut from the provincial budget.

The BID budget was proposed to come from a $300 per business fee, generating upwards of $90,000 per year. Lutz said city grant money was also possible.

Dress Well with Gisele owner, Gisele Dube is a new business owner and a Chamber of Commerce member and executive. She said cooperation between the Chamber and proposed BID is important.

“My business is effected by other businesses and we all should expect to work together to make all our businesses work,” she said. “Having two separate mandates just splits everybody up. I don’t think that’s the right way to think.”

The MBRC board will now draft a proposal to present to council.  in 2018.
