Mustangs rebound vs Bruins; Hawks rout Wolves

Nov 26, 2017 | 8:00 AM

The Melfort Mustangs resumed their winning ways Saturday night, edging the Estevan Bruins 3-2.

The victory falls on the heels of a disappointing loss against the last-place Yorkton Terriers earlier this week.

Kinistino product Tristen Elder opened the scoring in the first period, giving the Mustangs a lead they never relinquished. The 20-year-old said it was important for the team to regroup.

“It was a huge win after that weak one against Yorkton. The boys battled hard tonight at home,” Elder said.

Justin Ball scored his 10th goal of the season in the second period, widening the gap to 2-0. Kaelan Holt would draw Estevan within one before the second period closed.

The Mustangs restored the two-goal margin in the third period, Colin Schmidt scored his eighth of the season with 12 minutes left in the third. Zach Goberis beat Evan Plotnik during a five-on-three power play but the Bruins couldn’t find the equalizer.

The Bruins started their northern road trip last Tuesday in Nipawin, and Elder said they wanted to use that to their advantage.

“We all knew they were coming off a three- or four-game road trip so we took advantage for sure,” he said.

Melfort produced 48 shots on goal, Lukacs made 45 stops, and Plotnik made 30 saves in his 12th victory.

The Mustangs visit Flin Flon on Sunday, a make-up date for a game postponed earlier this month. Elder said the team already looking towards that game.

“We need to take care of our bodies and come prepared,” he said.

In Nipawin Saturday the Hawks crushed La Ronge 9-2, sweeping a home-and-home weekend series with the Ice Wolves.

Michael Grant led the way scoring a hat-trick and adding an assist. Grant Baetsen scored a pair, while Brett Harasymuk, Brandan Arnold, Jeremy Bisson and Josh McDougall also chipped in with goals.

Goaltender Jake Anthony earned his second straight win on the weekend.

The Hawks are home to Weyburn on Tuesday.

Melfort and Nipawin are separated by three points at the top of the Sherwood division.
