Hawks hang double-digits on Wings

Nov 28, 2017 | 11:46 PM

The Nipawin Hawks are soaring and scoring.

Tuesday night at the Centennial Arena, the Hawks outclassed Weyburn skating away with a 10-1 victory. Nipawin has won six straight games and scored 19 times in their last two contests.

Brett Harasymuk led the charge firing a hat-trick and a pair of assists for five points. The 20 year-old Yorkton product said every facet of their game is working.

“I feel like we’re playing the right way, playing hard, fast down low. Teams can’t catch up to us,” he said.

Brandan Arnold scored twice, Chad McCartney, Michael Grant, Logan Casavant, Jake Tremblay and Austin Mikesch rounded out the scoring for the home side. Harasymuk said the team is having a lot of fun over the winning streak.

“That’s what it’s all about; it’s easy to come to the rink. You look at Weyburn tonight, they didn’t want to be here,” he said.

Thomas Lenchyshyn provided three assists, and Grant had three points as did Casavant.

Declan Hobbs stopped 23 shots in the Nipawin net, while Weyburn’s Arik Weersink only lasted 4:30 allowing three goals on nine shots. Matthew Chan gave up seven on 37 shots.

The Hawks’ power-play was potent as the club converted on four of five chances.

Nipawin continues to close the gap at the top of the Sher-Wood division standings, they sit three back of Melfort with two less games played. The northeast rivals meet Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace. The Hawks have lost all four times they’ve met Melfort this season. Harasymuk said they are confident ahead of their fifth meeting.

“When we played Melfort our scoring hasn’t been there. With 19 goals in two games we’re feeling much better,” he said.

Face-off is 7:30 p.m.
