Carrot River and Arborfield claim “Sled Town Saskatchewan” title

Dec 7, 2017 | 11:00 AM

The Carrot River and Arborfield region has been named Saskatchewan’s “Sled Town” for 2018.

The region’s snowmobile club, the Pasquia Snow Goers Club Inc. is behind an entry into the 2018 Sled Town Showdown contest, which is sponsored by SnoRiders West magazine. Pasquia Snow Goers president Jeff Cavanaugh said it’s exciting to be named provincial champions.

“This is the first year we’ve gotten this far. I believe Hudson Bay has been the winners in Saskatchewan, and our trail system is quite comparable to theirs,” Cavanaugh told northeastNOW.

Their group includes Zenon Park residents as well, Cavanaugh said, where the local club has about 40 members.

The contest pitted the region against North Battleford in round one, and in the second round the Snow Goers knocked out Kelvington. In round three they out-voted Chitek Lake, and in round four they beat Archerwill. In round five the group is up against the entry from Powerview-Pine Falls, Man., and Cavanaugh said he’s excited by the prospect of winning the top prize.

“If we make it past Manitoba here, we’ll be up against Alberta or British Columbia, which would be pretty darn cool for little Carrot River,” he said.

Cavanaugh said there is no monetary prize from the contest, but the publicity advertising the region’s tourism opportunities is beneficial.

“You don’t have to be a snowmobiler, just support tourism in northeast Saskatchewan,” he said.

Voting for the next round closes Dec. 17, and votes can be cast online.
