Chamber member calls for change

Dec 12, 2017 | 7:34 AM

A “paid up member” of the Melfort Chamber of Commerce is asking city council to take a look at the current state of the organization.

Don Signori said the $30,000 funded to the Chamber through tax dollars warrants council involvement. He added dropping membership is a large issue.

“We’ve lost many businesses in the Chamber because of the current structure,” he said. “They can’t work effectively with some of the people there right now.”

Signori called on council to withhold funding “until problems, if they exist” can be fixed. He also asked for council to order an audit, instruct the Chamber to schedule an annual general meeting, and look at the roles and duties of staff.

Signori maintained he was backed by other members.

“We had several business people show up tonight. Now it’s out there whether the city gets involved or not,” he said.

Melfort has an appointed city councillor who acts as a liaison to the Chamber board.

“We don’t have anymore clout than any other member does, there’s a board elected to govern the Chamber,” Mayor Rick Lang said.

Lang said the basis of the funding to the Chamber is to promote tourism in the region, not fund day to day operations. He added at this point the city will not intervene in the operations of the organization, but he said they may “look to see if they are getting the value of their money” during upcoming budget discussions.
