Mrs. Sask. Globe fundraising for Ronald McDonald House

The Nipawin woman who will represent Saskatchewan at the Mrs. Canada Globe pageant in Regina early next year, is spreading awareness about Ronald McDonald House.

Alesia Campbell, 26, was encouraged to fundraise for a charity as part of her responsibilities as Mrs. Saskatchewan. Campbell said she picked the charity because the funds raised get to those who need it.

“So many charities these days, too much money goes into the CEO’s pocket and not enough in the actual organization. With the actual Ronald McDonald house, all the money they’ve raised goes right into the house and it’s just such an amazing cause,” she said.

Ronald McDonald House provides accommodation for families of sick children travelling to Saskatoon to receive medical treatment. Over the Christmas holiday season, families are treated to a Christmas dinner and gifts are provided for the children. The charity organization’s central house is located in Saskatoon, but there is also a room for families at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert.

“I am just excited to put my name behind Ronald McDonald House and get the word out about this amazing organization,” she said.

Campbell was selected as Mrs. Saskatchewan Globe in May after applying online and going through a series of interviews. She said all her friends and even her husband were completely shocked she applied, but also very supportive. Entering a beauty pageant was a dream she had as a little girl and is now hoping she can be a positive influence for other young girls.

“I grew up in a world where everybody had to be a toothpick if they were going to be described as beautiful and now we’re in a society where it’s more acceptable to be curvy,” Campbell said. “To me it’s more about showing people you don’t have to be a model to be classified as beautiful.”

Campbell has created a gofundme page for her cause. There will also be a raffle draw in Nipawin on Friday with all proceeds from the ticket sales benefitting Ronald McDonald House. Campbell said she raised a couple hundred dollars so far towards her $1,000 goal.

The Mrs. Canada Globe pageant, which involves a bikini and evening gown competition as well as interview with the contestant, will take place in Regina Feb. 9-11.
