The Nipawin Hawks returned to the win column Friday night, edging the Melville Millionaires 2-1.

Austin Mikesch scored his 13th goal of the season in the first period giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The game remained at that score until Cory Schillo tied the game 1-1 early in the third period. Nipawin defenseman Josh McDougall scored the game-winning goal at 15:51 in the third, assisted by Mikesch, for his second point of the game. McDougall now has 12 goals on the year.

Declan Hobbs picked up the win in the Nipawin net stopping 22 of 23 shots. Jake Anthony made two saves in three minutes of relief at the end of the second period. Hobbs returned to play the third period.

Melville’s Colby Entz allowed two goals on 26 Nipawin shots.

The teams combined for 14 power-plays, but neither side capitalized on the man-advantage.

The victory extends the Hawks point streak to 20 games. The club will look to extend the stretch Saturday at home versus Melville.

The Mustangs were also on the road Friday night.

Though Melfort fell behind 2-0 in the first period, they battled back and rattled off six straight goals in La Ronge, tripling the Ice Wolves 6-2.

Zach Bannister and Shane Hounsell gave La Ronge the early lead but Mustang captain Andrew Thompson scored his 13th goal and Drew Warketine notched his fifth goal of the year tying the game before the first intermission.

There was no scoring in the second period.

Loch Morrison’s 13th goal of the season turned out to be the game-winner at the 5:35 mark of the third period. Justin Ball added his 15th goal, Adam Hergott picked up his fifth and Nolan Kadachuk chipped in with his third goal of the year.

Hunter Arps earned the victory in the Mustangs’ net making 31 saves. Merek Pipes stopped 43 of 49 Melfort shots.

The Mustangs have now won six games in a row. The clubs meet again Saturday at the Northern Lights Palace.
