Mustangs and Hawks conclude weekend sweeps

Jan 14, 2018 | 11:51 AM

The Mustangs are on a roll, after winning their seventh straight game Saturday night.

Melfort jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against the La Ronge Ice Wolves and never looked back cruising to a 6-1 win.

Colin Schmidt scored his 15th goal of the season, Zach Anderson picked up his third of the year and Eric McNeilly notched his second all before the halfway point of the first period.

Anderson said the game plan included a strong start.

“Yes, it did, we wanted to start well and get ahead in the game and hold the lead,” he said.

Drew Warketine buried his sixth goal of the year for the lone second-period goal. Rock Ruschkowski added his ninth goal of the campaign and Loch Morrison picked up his 14th of the year, extending the lead to 6-0 with nine minutes to play.

Zach Bannister spoiled Evan Plotnik’s second straight shut-out after a lucky bounce deflected past the Mustangs’ netminder. Plotnik, 20, made 31 saves in his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) leading 18th victory of the season.

Overall, Melfort has suffered just one loss at the Northern Lights Palace this season in 18 games. Anderson said a couple factors come into play when the team is at home.

“We know the rink well, we know the bounces and I think the motivation from the fans really helps too,” Anderson said.

Melfort is off until Friday when they visit Melville.

The Hawks are also continuing to scorch the rest of the SJHL. Nipawin extended their season-high point streak to 21 games with a 4-1 win over Melville Saturday at the Centennial Arena.

The Millionaires took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but Nipawin would score four unanswered goals to secure the team’s 30th win.

Michael Grant scored his 21st of the season, tying the game 1-1. Austin Mikesch fired his 15th of the year, standing up as the game-winning goal. Jordan Simoneau added his seventh of the campaign in the third and Tyler Adams capped the scoring with his first goal with Nipawin into an empty net.

Jake Anthony stopped 28 shots for the victory. Colby Entz allowed three goals on 32 Nipawin chances.

The Hawks next host Notre Dame Friday, Jan. 19.
