Melfort students showcase artwork

Feb 8, 2018 | 10:31 AM

Young artists from across Melfort have the opportunity to show-off their creative sides this month.

For the second year, students from Maude Burke, Reynolds Central and Brunswick Schools contributed art pieces that are now on display at the Kerry Vickar Centre. Wednesday night the schools combined to host a launch of the month-long exhibit. Elyse Johnson, 11, a Grade 6 Brunswick School student, said Canada was the theme for her piece punctuated with a blood moon and log cabin.

“When people think of Canada they think of cold and snow. That’s why I had the polar bears, snowflakes, and the mountains,” she said.

Johnson’s artwork was based on Canadian artist Ted Harrison’s work. Harrison, known for his paintings of the Yukon, passed away in 2015. Johnson said Harrison featured red moons frequently in his work which inspired her and her piece.

“I thought everything blue was kind of cool so that way the moon, polar bear, and cabin stand out,” Johnson said.

The Grade 3 class from Maude Burke School also submitted pieces for the exhibit this year using a nature theme. Zakery Derkach, 8, said it’s exciting to have his picture shown.

“That’s what I like most about art class; sometimes you get to show it off,” Derkach said.

Kole Carson, also 8 in the Grade 3 class at Maude Burke, was happy to see his picture on the wall.

“It’s awesome, I really like art. My favourite part is using the paints,” he said.

The exhibit will remain up until the end of February.
