Tisdale girl raises large donation for Telemiracle

Feb 21, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Telemiracle 42 is just about two weeks away and a young girl from Tisdale proved anyone can help make a difference.

McKenzie Squires,12, raised over $2,300 for Telemiracle by selling popcorn and bowling.

“I think every person deserves a chance at life and I wanted to help people out,” Squires said when asked what made her want to get involved.

To meet her $2,000 goal, Squires raised $716 alone through popcorn sales. She sat outside the gas station for about nine hours in total over two days selling popcorn. She then went door to door collecting pledges for a bowl-a-thon.

Her mother, Janet Squires, said her daughter was very determined.

“There were some days she was out going out and it was probably -30 Celsius out and all you could see were her little eyes sticking out,” she said.

Squires said she is very thankful for the community support her family received. Tisdale Rentals donated the popcorn maker and the Beeland Co-op provided the popcorn.

“It just kind of goes to show what a good communty that we have that they were willing to do that,” Squires said.

Telemiracle 42 will be broadcasted live from the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina March 3rd and 4th. All the money raised will go to the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation, which supports people and groups in Saskatchewan by providing special needs equipment and access to medical assistance.

Last year’s telethon raised over $5 million. The all-time record is $5.9 million set in 2012.
