Carrot River RCMP welcome public input

Mar 1, 2018 | 9:00 AM

The Carrot River RCMP want to hear the public’s opinions on policing in the community.

The detachment hosted a public meeting Wednesday, opening the floor for discussion on the tactics used by police and their progress on the detachment’s annual performance review. Sgt. Richard Tonge said the topics brought up from the public, including marijuana legalization issues and the Gerald Stanley verdict, didn’t surprise him.

Drinking and driving, erratic driving, speeds in school zones and the dangers of fentanyl were also brought up by the crowd. Despite the list of topics, the mood was positive throughout the meeting, with several comments praising police visibility in the town and area. Tonge said increasing members’ presence was a goal of the detachment’s over the past couple years.

“The public wants to see the police out; Carrot River is a very pro-police community. It’s so much better when you know the people and fit into the community,” he said.
