Tisdale Trojans named 2019 Telus Cup West Regionals host

The best Western Canadian midget AAA hockey teams are coming to Tisdale.

The Saskatchewan AAA Midget Hockey League announced Wednesday morning the Trojans will host the 2019 Telus Cup West Regionals for the first time since 2006. Club president Brett Casavant said the committee deserved the chance to host the event again.

“Our bid has been amazing ever since we won the event in 2006. We used the blueprint from that bid and make it even better. I’ve seen bids from other centres and they are not comparable,” he told northeastNOW.

The team put another bid in to hold the 2016 event at the RECplex but was passed over for Saskatoon. The tournament rotates between sites in northern Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. The Trojans 2017-18 season just ended Sunday in Swift Current with a loss to the Legionnaires. Casavant said the news today will soften the blow for the returning players.

“We have a young team of really talented kids coming back. We have the opportunity to be a great team next year and not even receive the bye into the Regionals but to win our way in,” Casavant said.

The news was welcomed by the town as well on Wednesday. Director of Economic Development Sean Wallace said the community has a strong reputation when it comes to holding top calibre events.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the town of Tisdale. We have been known for hosting very large and successful events such as curling (2018 provincial Tankard), dance events, and of course hockey,” he said.

The dates are not set but the tournament is usually played in early April. The winner moves on to the national AAA midget championship.
