Nipawin woman wins big in local fundraiser

Nipawin residents are no longer chasing the ace.

The Nipawin Pool Improvement Committee raised thousands of dollars for change room upgrades and Darlene Pickering won just over $23,000 during the fundraising campaign, which launched last September. Every Thursday since Sept. 28, tickets were sold for a chance to draw the ace of spades to claim the growing jackpot prize. On Thursday, March 8, Pickering was the lucky recipient. She said words were hard to come by after she picked the winning card.

“I was so nervous, I just wanted to get off the stage,” she told northeastNOW. “I have more reaction if I win a sleeve of balls at ladies’ night, I hoot and holler. I couldn’t say anything, it was crazy.”

Non-profit groups and area businesses volunteered during the fundraising initiative providing meals during the events. Tickets were purchased every week and the weekly winner would collect 20 per cent of the nightly sales and 30 per cent was added to the growing pot. The remaining 50 per cent was kept by the pool committee. Pickering said the campaign brought the town together.
