A group of drama students from Nipawin won a regional competition and will head to Regina in May for a province-wide competition.

The drama group from LP Miller Comprehensive in Nipawin won the Region 7 Drama Festival in Tisdale over the weekend. The 16-member drama group won best overall production for their performance of M’Aidez, a play set approximately 160 years into the future.

Nicole Stadnek, Vice Principal at LP Miller Comprehensive, wrote the play and worked with students on the production. The play tells the story of two teens viewing a museum display about destructive behaviours facing today’s teens, including cutting, sexual harassment and promiscuity.

M’Aidez is a French term meaning, ‘help me.’

“It’s a series of displays or characters from our world talking about issues that our teens face,” Stadnek said. “Adults are there to support them, but they need to figure out how to navigate without destroying themselves.”

Stadnek worked on the play’s storyline for more than a year, and got help from the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild to develop the finished product. She co-directed the play with fellow teacher Tessa Opp, and student director Jaycie Empey.

Stadnek also collaborated with students on the script and performance.

“I did have comments they felt it was really accurate, and they felt it depicted what they face,” she added.

This is the third year in a row that LP Miller has won the regional drama festival for one of their productions. LP Miller will perform M’Aidez again at the provincial drama festival May 3 to 5 in Regina.
